Do you know your blood pressure number? If you have high blood pressure you’re not alone. Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure with many of them not even knowing they have it. The best way to know if you do have high blood pressure is to have it checked by your doctor. This silent killer can wreak havoc on your body without you even knowing it, so have your blood pressure checked regularly.

 

Knowing your blood pressure numbers is key to bettering your health, especially if the numbers are high.

 

One of the best ways to prevent and manage your blood pressure is by living a healthy lifestyle and controlling stress.

 

Other ways to make the change matter are:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt

  • Limit alcohol

  • Exercise regularly

  • Quit smoking

  • Take your medications properly

  • Work together with your doctor

 

Note: A diagnosis of high blood pressure must be confirmed by a medical professional. A doctor should also monitor and evaluate any unusually low blood pressure readings.

 

Here are some heart-healthy foods for your healthy lifestyle!

  • Vegetables

  • Fruits

  • Whole grains

  • Skinless poultry and fish

  • Nuts and legumes

  • Non-tropical vegetable oils

 

However, with good comes bad so make sure to steer clear or limit these:

  • Red meats (chose lean cuts of meat if you do choose to eat red meats)

  • Sodium

  • Sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages

  • Saturated and trans Fats

When you’re out shopping make sure to read the nutrition labels for sodium amount because foods high in sodium can increase blood pressure; remember this saying “the higher the salt the higher the blood pressure.” Also, be mindful about saturated and trans fats, which can raise your cholesterol. Knowing what is truly healthy when you’re at the grocery store can be overwhelming at times so to make it easier the American Heart Association (AHA) has created the Heart-Check Mark! This symbol means the product meets the AHA criteria for sodium, trans fat, and saturated fat for a single serving of food product for health people over the age of 2.
